Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt uncomfortable, even though you couldn’t quite explain why?
Or found yourself becoming irritable, only to realise several hours later that you hadn’t eaten? Perhaps you’ve felt your shoulders tense when thinking about a meeting that isn’t happening until next week, or suddenly become aware that you’ve been holding your breath while reading an email.
We often think of our experiences as beginning with our thoughts. Something happens, we think about it, and then our body responds.
In reality, things are much more interconnected.
Your brain and body are constantly exchanging information, interpreting what’s happening around you and within you, and using that information to shape how you feel, think and respond.
Much of this happens without you consciously noticing it.
Your brain isn’t simply recording the world
It’s tempting to imagine the brain as a camera, faithfully recording everything we see and hear. But perception is much more active than that.
Your brain is constantly making sense of incomplete information. It draws on context, memory and previous experiences to help interpret what is happening.
Think about the last time you misheard someone. For a moment, you may have been completely convinced they said something they didn’t. Your ears received sound, but your brain had to decide what that sound meant.
This happens across our senses all the time.
It also helps explain why two people can experience the same situation and come away with completely different interpretations. What we experience isn’t only influenced by what is happening around us, but by the brain making sense of it.
Your body is sending information too
Now notice your body.
Can you feel where your feet are without looking at them? Can you tell whether you’re hungry, warm, tense or thirsty?
These sensations are part of another stream of information your brain is continually processing.
Interoception describes our ability to sense what is happening inside our body, while proprioception helps us understand where our body is positioned in space.
Most of the time, we don’t consciously think about either.
Yet these internal signals can influence our experience in ways we may not immediately recognise.
How often have you thought, “Why am I so emotional today?” before realising you barely slept the night before?
Or assumed you suddenly couldn’t cope with something that would normally feel manageable, only to recognise that you were in pain, hungry, overstimulated or exhausted?
Sometimes we look for complicated psychological explanations when our whole system is simply asking to be included in the conversation.

Your attention changes what you notice
Here’s a slightly annoying experiment.
Notice where your tongue is sitting in your mouth.
You probably weren’t aware of it five seconds ago. Now it may be difficult not to notice.
The sensation didn’t suddenly appear. Your attention changed.
Our brains have to filter huge amounts of information because consciously noticing everything would be overwhelming. The feeling of your clothes against your skin, background noises, your position in the chair and countless other sensations are usually pushed into the background.
This filtering is useful, but it also shows us that what reaches our conscious awareness represents only part of what our nervous system is processing.
Sometimes your body responds to something that hasn’t happened
Have you ever felt physically tense about an event several days away?
The appointment is Friday, but your stomach seems to think it’s happening now.
Our brains don’t only respond to what is happening in the present. They also imagine, anticipate and predict.
When we picture a difficult conversation or worry about an upcoming event, our bodies can respond to that imagined scenario in the present moment.
This doesn’t mean we’re deliberately creating the feeling. It simply demonstrates how closely thoughts, predictions, sensations and physical responses interact.
Even pain is more complex than it appears
Pain is another powerful example of why separating the brain from the body can be unhelpful.
Pain is absolutely real, but our experience of it isn’t determined by one factor alone. The nervous system processes information alongside many other influences, which can include previous experiences, expectations, sleep, stress, emotions and the wider environment.
Even something as ordinary as scratching an itch gives us a glimpse of this complexity. Scratching introduces another sensation, which can temporarily alter how strongly we experience the itch.
Our sensory experiences are not simply messages travelling untouched from the body to the brain. They are continually being processed along the way.

Looking at the whole picture
Perhaps one of the most useful questions we can ask ourselves is not simply, “Why do I feel like this?”
Instead, we might ask, “What is happening across my whole system right now?”
Have I slept? Have I eaten? Am I in pain? Is my environment overwhelming? Am I anticipating something difficult? What sensations am I noticing? What might my brain be interpreting or predicting?
There won’t always be a simple answer, and understanding the brain and body isn’t about analysing every sensation we experience.
It’s about widening the picture.
Because we are not minds being carried around by bodies, nor bodies being controlled by minds. We are integrated human beings, constantly sensing, interpreting, predicting and responding.
And there is far more happening within that system than we ever consciously realise.
